Walk It Out

About 10 years ago, I was the heaviest I had ever been in my life and I decided that it was time to get healthy.  A  family member was on Weight Watchers at the time and it inspired me to give it a try. I did very well on WW and I lost about 25 lbs, but I was not exercising and I dieted without exercise for about a year and a half. Once I graduated high school, physical therapy was no longer given to me through the school system, preventing me from getting exercise.

In September of 2006,  it just so happened that I needed to take a weight training class for college credit and it could not have come at a better time.  A few days into the class, my professor said to me that she wanted me to give the treadmill a try.  I remember being so nervous because I had never been on a treadmill. She convinced me to do 30 seconds and I remember thinking that was the longest 30 seconds of my life! I remember hanging on the right handle bar because I was so tired, but I did it!

Each time I went to weight training class, I started setting small goals for myself.  Even if I walked for a few seconds longer than the previous time, I was so happy!  My goal for the end of the class was 5 minutes. It might not sound like a lot, however for a person with limited mobility that is a big deal. I did not quite accomplish that goal, however I continued to use the treadmill and after about a year and a half I got up to an hour! (actually an hour a minute and a second lol.)  The point of this post is that if you set your mind to something you can achieve it no matter how big or small your goals are.

Thanks for reading! :)
