Today, I am thankful for the opportunity to touch people's hearts. It was my dance company's second performance for Your Move and I think it went so much better than the first time we performed. It was better because I think we connected with the story, each other, and the audience so much more than the first time. We were in the moment and it felt amazing.
The piece was about 9/11 and paying tribute to all of the people who were involved. We started out the piece as if we were just having a normal day, and then all of the chaos happens. The piece ends with the aftermath and just trying to pick up the pieces and move on. I wasn't directly affected by the tragedy, but I tried to think about a person that I've lost who meant something to me. Even if the audience wasn't directly affected by the story, they can relate to loss. I think that's what makes dance so universal. Everyone has a story to tell and everyone has similar experiences that they have gone through. I dedicated my performance to my friend Megan, who passed away in February.
After we performed, I went back into the theater to talk to some of the audience members and I got a lot of great feedback. One person told me it helped her understand her 19 year old daughter better. Even she didn't know what she meant by that haha. Another person said that they were only watching me. (no offense to the other dancers) I have a unique ability because I dance from my wheelchair. It feels good to change someone's perception about what dance is. I may not have the technicality of an able-bodied dancer, but I can still connect to people. I dance from my heart.
Tonight was a lot of fun and I got to meet some really great people. I just wish that I got to see the rest of the performances. All of the dancers in the green room were so nice and supportive of each other. Most of all, I loved dancing with my group. They are the nicest people. I love you guys! Thanks for reading!
