The Movement Series With Tyce Diorio Part 2

Last night, I got to meet my favorite choreographer on So You Think You Can Dance, Tyce Diorio!  Tyce is a dancer, choreographer, and an Emmy Award winner.  Most recently, he choreographed Taylor Swift's Red Tour!

He is so nice and down to earth! I was expecting him to be the type of person that thinks he is better than everyone, but he is not like that at all.  He even helped me modify some of the choreography and he helped me with the steps that I wasn't getting right away.  He was so funny too.  He was telling us a whole bunch of stories about growing up as a dancer.

The first class was for marked dance project and William Paterson students only.  It was a Broadway class. We did a warm up for a few minutes and then we jumped right into the choreography. The idea behind the choreography was to pretend we were homeless people.  He wanted us to worry about being the character and not to worry about getting the steps down perfectly.  I can't remember the song we did.

During the class, FiOs1 News was filming us and they featured us on the 10:00 news! After class, the reporter from FiOs1 News interviewed me and asked me about my experience being a disabled dancer and what other people's perceptions of me are when they see me dance.  That was a cool experience! Here is the news clip:

The second class was a Contemporary class and it was for the public.  We started out doing some floor exercises and then he had us move across the floor however we wanted to. He said that walking is the hardest thing for a dancer to do because you really have to keep your focus. You have to stay in character the whole time.  After that exercise, he taught us choreography to an acoustic cover of Rihanna's "We Found Love" by Jessie J.  I picked up that choreography a lot faster because I was more comfortable and the music was slower. In general, I can pick up Contemporary choreography pretty well and it is one of my favorite styles of dance.  Tyce had us break into groups at the end and do the choreography ourselves. I even showed him my fancy turn that I have been practicing and he loved it!

The best part is that I got to share the experience with two of my good friends, who are also dancers. They did an amazing job! When we were done with the choreography, we improved and it was so much fun improving with them. We got our picture taken individually with Tyce and then we took a group picture.  Thank you to Tyce Diorio, FiOs 1 News, and Mark for an awesome experience that I will never forget!
