Pitch Perfect Movie Review

Pitch Perfect is a musical comedy, starring an ensemble cast of Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Anna Camp, Ester Dean, Alexis Knapp and Brittany Snow.  The movie is about an all-girl a capella group, the Barden Bellas, that competes against other a capella groups to win Nationals.  The first scene of the movie takes place at a national a capella competition and Aubrey Posen projectile vomits all over the stage, ruining their chances of winning the competition.   A few months later, Beca Mitchell, played by Anna Kendrick, has no desire to attend college and was forced to by her father, a college professor.  She wants to pursue a career in music and she creates mash-ups of songs as a hobby.  She begins an internship at the college radio station and meets Jesse, who begins to develop a crush on her.

Beca stopped attending classes and when her father finds out, he makes a deal with her.  If she joins a club on campus and still did not want to go to college after a year, he would help her pay to move to Los Angeles.  She hesitantly joined the Bellas, but after performing in a competition at Carolina University, she suggested they should become more daring because they had the same setlist from the previous year.  Even with the same setlist they were able to place second and they advanced to the semi-finals.

At the semi-finals, Beca surprised the group by providing an impromptu back-up of her favorite song into a song the group had always performed after she discovered the audience was starting to lose interest.  Aubrey did not like the risk that Beca took in changing the song, so they started fighting and Beca quits the Bellas.  The members wanted to change the traditions of the group against Aubrey’s wishes and Beca was convinced to rejoin the group.  Beca was arrested after a fight broke out after the semi-finals, and Jesse tried to call her father to help her out.  Jesse and Beca’s friendship became heated after the fight.

At Nationals, the group performs a song that was arranged by Beca, which is the theme song from The Breakfast Club and Jesse’s favorite movie.  The song served as an apology to Jesse after Beca yelled at Jesse for trying to help her when she got arrested.  At the end of the movie, Jesse and Beca kiss and make up.

I thought it was a really good movie.  I had a lot of good laughs and I thought the music was great. I heard a lot of songs that I haven't heard in ages.  Anna Kendrick is a really good actress and singer.  Rebel Wilson is hilarious and she has a lot of great one-liners.  In my opinion, the movie was a cross between Mean Girls and Glee.  I was expecting it to be similar to Glee because it was based on an a capella group, but I think it has a better story line. My favorite part was a the end when they performed Beca's song during Nationals. I would definitely recommend it and I would give it 3 out of 4 stars.
