Life From My Perspective

"The choices we make reveal the true nature of our character." How awesome is this commercial? The other basketball players were in wheelchairs because they wanted to experience basketball on their friend's level and I think that is what true friendship is.  You have to put yourself in the other person's shoes to really understand what they go through. It reminds me of two instances in my life where able-bodied people experienced life from my perspective.

My friend, who is able-bodied, came up with the idea to co-choreograph a piece where we would both dance in wheelchairs.  I thought it was a great idea because it gave her the opportunity to move in a different way that she was not used to and it gave the audience a different perspective of how an able-bodied dancer would dance with a disabled dancer.  It took her some time to get used to being in a chair and she did an awesome job and I thought our dance came out great!

Here is our performance from 2011- "Circles" by Joe Satriani

I played Sled Hockey for 5 years. I sat in a sled with two blades on the bottom, and instead of having one long hockey stick, I had two short sticks with blades on the end of them. The blades helped me skate across the ice. We used to play charity games and they were so much fun. We played against firefighters who are not disabled and had never played hockey from a sled. We obviously had a lot more practice with navigating the sled than them. It's not that easy to keep your balance and to turn when you are going fast. It was so funny to watch them fall out and complain that we didn't let them score. They got so mad!  It was great! I wish I had pictures of the firefighters in their sleds.

Me on the first day I started playing Sled Hockey:
