In an article by Johnathan Berr, the author states that Disneyland is discontinuing their Guest Assistance Card (GAC) as of October 9, 2013. A GAC is a card that allows people with disabilities to bypass all of the lines for the rides and attractions in the park. Instead, they will be implementing a new system called Disabled Assistance System (DAS). With a GAC, guests were able to use it throughout the park and with a DAS, guests will have to get a new card for each individual ride.
Getting a GAC was difficult because the cards are not being advertised and they require qualified individuals to apply at the park. The problem is, the park does not require disabled individuals to show proof of their disability and this allows anyone to receive a GAC, whether they need it or not. I have witnessed a lot of people getting those cards and using them without a documented disability. I went to see a show years ago, and there was a young woman who pretend to hurt her foot. She was able to get a wheelchair and when the doors opened to go into the show, she ran down to the front.
I do not agree with this new system. They already make it difficult to get a GAC and the DAS will make it even more complicated. I believe they should keep the GAC, but they should require guests to provide documentation before getting a card. It is not fair that people who do not need the cards are abusing the system. It is difficult enough for people who actually need these accommodations.
How do you feel about this new system?
